Crossovers usually get mocked by auto journalists as “tall wagons.” These scribes – and there are various, myself included, who’ve used this time period – don’t perceive why individuals don’t purchase precise wagons.
Certainly, simply the opposite day, the part of the Twitterverse reserved for auto writers had a dialogue about why the general public likes the much-loathed crossover a lot.
There’s the apparent purpose, after all – the general public within the car-buying public are both not automotive fans, or they’re fans compelled into crossover life by finances and life wants. We’ve been over this earlier than.
Experience peak and the provision of all-wheel-drive have been additionally tossed out as causes for the crossover love. One thought that I didn’t see – maybe as we speak’s Gen X and older Millennial consumers bear in mind the shitty wagons of the ‘80s (the identical ones that give Radwood attendees humorous emotions of their pants) and simply don’t need something to do with the phrase?
That’s not a shot at those that like outdated wagons. Like what you want, I received’t decide. However maybe the 42-year-old accountant who has children and pets and stuff to haul has solely unhealthy recollections of the Ford LTD his dad and mom dragged him to Boy Scouts in.
I convey this up not as a result of the dialog about crossovers appears unending in automotive circles, however as a result of the 2020 BMW X1 I’m about to cowl straddles a bizarre line. BMW would name it a crossover (really, of their model converse, it’s a “Sports activities Exercise Automobile”), and more than likely you’ll too, however the journey peak, or not less than the seating place, felt decrease than most.
And naturally, it’s all-wheel drive.
I’m not right here to debate whether or not it’s a crossover or wagon, however moderately, to state that to this reviewer, it felt nearer to the latter than the previous. And that’s tremendous, except the phrase wagon makes you make the identical face I make when confronted with broccoli. Which for many individuals, it does.
It’s greater than tremendous, really, as a result of whereas it has some flaws (a pair that appear uncommon for BMW), it’s not a foul little grocery-getter, ought to you have got the means.

The most important flaw was the steering – it felt a bit stiff and synthetic, and any highway suggestions gave the impression to be too simply filtered out. BMW steering could also be, generally, slightly heavier and extra synthetic than it was, however usually the automotive/crossover in query nonetheless feels linked to the highway in a approach that backs up the Final Driving Machine advertising spiel. Right here, it’s disjointed.
The two.0-liter turbo-four additionally struggles a bit at decrease RPMs, however in the event you kick the spurs, you may get the X1 shifting. It’s a bizarre driving expertise – the X1 is a small crossover/wagon, however it feels heavy. It rides stiffly, besides.
The place the X1 is stronger is in its luxurious sport. Sure, BMW sticker costs tend to get ridiculous, and we’ll get there in a bit, however even when BMWs really feel a bit bloated, by way of each content material combine and really bodily use of house, as of late, the cabin nonetheless has sufficient of an upscale really feel – and sufficient house, consolation, and quiet – to make John in center administration glad he stretched his fee finances.
It actually doesn’t damage that iDrive is just not almost as complicated because it as soon as was.
Driving the X1 for per week gave me blended emotions – it didn’t carry out fairly in addition to different Bimmer crossovers I’ve pushed, not less than not till you pushed it, at which level it got here alive a bit. However it was good and nice all the identical.
Fashion-wise, the updated-for-2020 X1 seems to be a bit like a shrunken model of the model’s bigger crossovers. It carries conventional BMW trappings such because the modernized model of the twin-kidney grille, and the form (narrowing in the direction of the grille) of the headlamp provides it an indignant look. The lamps themselves are actually hexagonal in form. A gently sloping roofline tapers off in the direction of the again. Different adjustments embrace bigger grille openings and totally different bumpers with “sharper” strains and bigger openings, in addition to bigger exhaust-pipe openings. The back lights are additionally up to date.
New inside trim bits, together with totally different stitching, new wheel designs, and three new obtainable colours are additionally a part of the updates, together with the choice of a decrease sprint that color-matches the leather-based.
The within is acquainted and good-looking, marred solely by a tacked-on infotainment display and a mass of too many buttons for audio and local weather controls.
As is commonly the case with German luxurious, eye-popping choices pricing is an issue. Whereas the bottom value for the xDrive 28i used to be an affordable $37,200, it rapidly shot as much as $48,645 as-tested. The $4,950 Premium Package deal had so much to do with this. The package deal included power-folding mirrors, keyless entry, moonroof, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, auto-dimming side-view mirrors, lumbar assist, ambient lighting, heated entrance seats, satellite tv for pc radio, LED headlamps and fog lamps, navigation, satellite tv for pc radio, and a head-up show. This replaces a Comfort Package deal you’re saddled with if you select the Mocha Dakota leather-based ($1,450), and it provides a number of options past what that package deal gives. Additionally, a few of the options may be added with out ticking the field for premium.
These pricing video games are annoying, and so they’ll proceed so long as luxury-brand consumers proceed being laydowns. Why tack on almost 5 grand for options which might be normal in lots of non-luxury autos, and require that the client spend not less than over 2 massive on the Comfort package deal if she or he desires to already drop greater than a g-note on a nicer inside? At the very least the 2 packages, and a fair higher-end Luxurious package deal don’t require you to spend extra on the inside to get them. Identical for the person choices.
Different choices included the paint job – $1,200 for a metallic gentle blue/grey – and 19-inch wheels ($600), sport seats ($400), adaptive cruise management ($1,000), wooden inside trim ($350), sliding and reclining rear seat ($300), and parking assistant ($200). Normal options included automated local weather management, Apple CarPlay, forward-collision warning with collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, speed-limit data, automated excessive beams, USB, Bluetooth, and an influence tailgate.
Should you may dwell with out satellite tv for pc radio and navigation and a moonroof, you possibly can equip an X1 at an affordable value. Go for the no-charge paint, inside, and inside trim, and choose judiciously from the choice checklist. Stay within the South? Ditch the heated seats. Use CarPlay to offer you nav and your individual music and skip XM. Save a grand by not utilizing adaptive cruise. Drive the old style approach.
By skipping the metallic paint and higher-end inside supplies, I constructed a sub-$40Ok X1 with all-wheel drive on-line. You would add one characteristic, corresponding to heated seats, and be at or simply over $40,000 with D and D, relying on which characteristic you decide. Even in the event you decide most or the entire options provided individually, you possibly can maintain the worth below $45Ok.
On the value, the X1 can be an affordable entry level to the model for the well-heeled household purchaser. And that purchaser would get a decently performing, upscale errand-runner.
However as is, BMW’s pricing technique sours the expertise.
And whether or not you name it a wagon or a crossover or no matter, that’s disappointing.
