2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Premium review: Return of the King – Digital Trends

Identified for the workaday Camry and RAV4, Toyota doesn’t have many nameplates that stir tons of pleasure. That’s why the return of the Supra is such a giant deal. The Supra is to Toyota what the Mustang is to Ford, an iconic efficiency automotive with a passionate fan base. Just like the Mustang, the Supra additionally turned a film star, due to the Quick & Livid franchise.

In contrast to any earlier Supra, the fifth-generation 2020 mannequin was developed with outdoors assist. It might have a Toyota badge on the hood, however beneath the 2020 Supra is definitely a BMW Z4. The 2 automobiles have been developed in tandem, a transfer that gave Toyota a brand new Supra at a fraction of the price of creating it independently. It additionally means you’ll discover German DNA on nearly each inch of this ostensibly Japanese sports activities automotive.

An analogous technique birthed the Toyota 86, which is twinned with the Subaru BRZ. We appreciated the 86, so can Toyota work the identical magic with a distinct accomplice? To search out out, we spent per week with a 2020 Toyota GR Supra 3.Zero Premium (“GR” stands for “Gazoo Racing,” the Toyota division tasked with fine-tuning the automotive).

The Supra has a base value of $50,920, however the Premium mannequin provides options like wi-fi Apple CarPlay, an upgraded audio system, and a bigger touchscreen. That, together with an elective Driver Help package deal, introduced the value of our take a look at automotive to $56,615.

Design and inside

Inside and outside, this automotive is like no earlier Supra. As a substitute of taking design cues from previous fashions, the 2020 Supra’s exterior styling is predicated on the 2014 Toyota FT-1 idea. Translating idea automobiles into manufacturing automobiles is all the time tough, as ideas typically aren’t designed with crash testing or inside ergonomics in thoughts. Whereas a major quantity of the FT-1 made it into the manufacturing Supra, some compromises have been made. The entrance finish specifically seems a bit bloated in comparison with the FT-1, doubtless a concession to European pedestrian-safety requirements.

Except for the Toyota emblem on the steering wheel, the inside is all BMW. The shifter and rotary infotainment controller are lifted straight from the German automaker’s catalog, and the touchscreen sits on high of the dashboard, relatively than being embedded in it, as in each different Toyota. The automotive’s BMW DNA reveals up in small particulars, too. To open the hood, it’s a must to pull the lever twice, and it’s a must to press a button on the shifter for it to work. Even the door chimes have the identical distinct BMW sound.

This isn’t a nasty factor. BMW is aware of nice interiors, and the Supra isn’t any exception. It has the most effective driving positions of any present sports activities automotive. It’s simple to get snug, the low dashboard affords glorious outward visibility, and all controls are simple to succeed in from the driving force’s seat.

Nevertheless, when you’re anticipating luxurious, put together to be dissatisfied. This can be a BMW inside, but it surely’s an entry-level model, particularly in comparison with the Supra’s BMW Z4 sibling.

The 2020 Supra is accessible solely as a two-door, two-seat coupe; not like the “Quick and Livid”-era Supra, there is no such thing as a lift-out roof panel. Inside area is about the identical because the convertible-only Z4, though the BMW gives a bit extra headroom. The Toyota boasts 10.2 cubic ft of cargo area to the Z4’s 9.9, nevertheless. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Porsche 718 Cayman have 12.6 cubic ft and 14.9 cubic ft of area, respectively, albeit break up between entrance and rear trunks.

Tech, infotainment, and driver help

The Supra has the identical iDrive infotainment system utilized in present BMW fashions, with similar graphics, menu structure, and rotary controller. The usual touchscreen is 6.5 inches, and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster is customary as properly. Premium fashions get an 8.8-inch touchscreen, in addition to a head-up show and wi-fi telephone charging.

As a result of it makes use of a BMW infotainment system, the Supra will get wi-fi Apple CarPlay – the one Toyota mannequin with that characteristic. Nevertheless, base fashions don’t get CarPlay in any respect, and Android Auto is just not out there. BMW plans so as to add wi-fi Android Auto to 2021 fashions, but it surely’s unclear if the Supra will get it as properly.

As with the general inside design, the infotainment expertise proves that there is no such thing as a disgrace in borrowing from the perfect. The iDrive system labored as properly within the Supra because it does in different BMW fashions, with intuitive menus and a rotary controller that was vastly simpler to make use of than the awkward touchpad from Toyota’s Lexus luxurious division. The one blemishes have been a display that tended to scrub out in direct daylight, and an audio system that sounded extra spectacular on paper than it did in actual life. (Premium fashions get a 12-speaker, 500-watt JBL system.)

Customary driver aids embody autonomous emergency braking, ahead collision warning, lane departure warning with steering help, and computerized excessive beams. The elective Driver Help package deal provides adaptive cruise management, blind spot monitoring, rear cross visitors alert, and parking sensors.

Driving expertise

Open the hood of the 2020 Toyota Supra, and the logic of the BMW partnership turns into obvious. The German automaker is aware of how you can make a fantastic driver’s automotive, sure, however extra importantly, BMW was capable of present Toyota with an inline-six engine. An inline-six was the final Supra’s calling card, however Toyota now not has one in its lineup. Moderately than spend the cash to develop a brand new engine only for one mannequin, Toyota borrowed BMW’s.

The three.0-liter turbocharged engine is shared with the Z4 and quite a few different BMW fashions, as is the eight-speed computerized transmission (if you would like a guide, get an 86). Our 2020 take a look at automotive made 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, however 2021 fashions get a lift to 382 hp and 368 lb.-ft. Toyota can even add a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the lineup for 2021. All Supra fashions are rear-wheel drive for the absolute best dealing with.

Toyota says the 2020 Supra 3.Zero will do zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. That’s about as fast as a Porsche 718 Cayman S (the Cayman is 0.1 second slower in base kind, however 0.1 second faster with the elective Sport Chrono package deal). It’s additionally 1.Zero second faster than a 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo, in response to a Motor Week take a look at, in case you have been questioning how the fashionable Supra compares to its film star predecessor. The extra highly effective 2021 Supra 3.Zero will do zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, matching the six-cylinder BMW Z4, in response to estimates from each producers.

The Supra felt loads fast, however that wasn’t what made the most important impression. What distinguishes the Supra from different sports activities automobiles is its maturity. It was snug and quiet sufficient for a protracted street journey, and agile sufficient to make backroads enjoyable. The Supra strikes a greater steadiness between consolation and sportiness than its Z4 sibling, which feels extra like a conventional luxurious automotive than a real sports activities automotive.

Toyota additionally achieved this with its personal tuning. Whereas another automakers embody a bewildering array of driving modes and anticipate clients to determine what works greatest, Toyota caught with simply two modes: Regular and Sport.

Whereas engineers nailed some particulars, they missed others. Toyota may have spent a bit extra time tuning the steering, which has the identical degree of suggestions as a worn-out arcade recreation. Whereas the Supra is admirably refined, that additionally makes for a much less participating driving expertise; the automotive doesn’t actually come alive till you hit extralegal speeds. The Supra additionally wasn’t designed to be pushed with the home windows down, a compromise doubtless made to attain larger aerodynamic effectivity. Decrease the home windows at something greater than parking zone speeds, and the buffeting noises turn out to be insufferable.

Gasoline mileage and security

The 2020 Supra is rated at 26 mpg mixed (24 mpg metropolis, 31 mpg freeway), which is similar to the Toyota’s BMW Z4 sibling and barely higher than a Porsche Cayman S. Over per week of driving, we averaged 24 mpg, in response to the automotive’s journey laptop.

As a result of the Supra is a brand new automobile, crash-testing scores from the Insurance coverage Institute for Freeway Security (IIHS) and Nationwide Freeway Visitors Security Administration (NHTSA) aren’t out there but, and predicting future reliability is tough. Anticipate the Supra to be extra like a BMW than a Toyota in that space, although, given that every one of its main parts are from the German agency. Meaning reliability would possibly fall in need of Toyota’s rock-solid fame.

Toyota gives a three-year, 36,000-mile, complete guarantee and five-year, 60,000-mile, powertrain guarantee, that are about common for a brand new automotive.

How DT would configure this automotive

Toyota retains issues easy with simply two trim ranges: Base and Premium. You’ll need to go together with the latter if you would like probably the most tech. The Premium mannequin will get the bigger, 8.8-inch touchscreen, wi-fi Apple CarPlay, and a head-up show as customary gear. On the driver-assist aspect, getting the total complement of options requires the elective Driver Help package deal, which provides adaptive cruise management, blind spot monitoring, rear cross visitors alert, and parking sensors for $1,195.

Earlier generations of the Supra have been properly catered to by the aftermarket, and we anticipate that to be the case with the brand new mannequin. It might take time for components to hit the market, however loads of upgrades ought to be out there sooner or later. Papadakis Racing has already taken the Supra’s BMW-sourced engine as much as 1,000 hp, displaying that the engine has loads of tuning potential.

Our take

The 2020 Toyota Supra was definitely worth the wait. It’s a well-executed sports activities automotive that balances driving thrills with on a regular basis usability and refinement. Some followers could not like Toyota’s use of a BMW platform, however they in all probability haven’t pushed the brand new Supra. From the infotainment system to the engine, the BMW bits are what make this automotive so good.

That goodness comes at a value, although. The Supra’s $50,920 base value undercuts the Porsche Cayman and Chevy Corvette, however when you examine the bins for elective tech options, that hole is basically erased. The Corvette begins at $59,995 — simply $3,380 greater than our take a look at automotive — and is on a distinct degree of efficiency. In the event you’re not wedded to the thought of a two-seater, you could possibly even have a fairly good Ford Mustang for a similar value as a base Supra.

For a lot much less cash than the Supra, two sports activities automobiles — the Nissan 370Z and Toyota’s personal 86 — boast extra character. With out there guide transmissions and extra visceral driving experiences, they go away in sensations the Supra filters out. Nevertheless, neither can match the Supra on energy or tech, and the Supra is the one one of many three we’d need to tackle a street journey.

Must you get one?

Sure. The Supra is a superb sports activities automotive that you could drive day by day.
