First drive review: The 2020 Mini Cooper SE electric car realigns how I see EVs – Green Car Reports

By the point I attain the sunny south Denver park filled with revelers basking within the first official day with out stay-at-home restrictions, I needed I had ignored my newfound freedom decree.

After almost three hours behind the wheel of the all-electric 2020 Mini Cooper SE, my again ached for something that resembled snug. I discovered respite at a tree, sitting on semi-cozy mulch, and contemplated my subsequent transfer.

How lengthy wouldn’t it take me to stroll house?

Now, earlier than I’m blasted by Anglophiles and Mini devotees for the previous remark, I had the Cooper SE pulling home element, which was my mistake; it’s almost unattainable to count on a toy to be a instrument.

It’s not the Cooper SE’s comparatively quick 110-mile EPA-estimated vary from its 32.6-kwh lithium-ion battery that torpedoes its usefulness and chucks it within the toy bin, however extra on that later. It’s not even the low trip top, nor the abbreviated again seat.

I didn’t understand till I left my bark perch and repositioned my L1 to L5 again into the proper numeric sequence later that evening that it dawned on me: The 2020 Cooper SE isn’t like all electrical automotive I’ve pushed but.

Downtown shift

Downtown Denver is an empty basket of asphalt, even once we’re not all grounded, and it’s the proper place to check the Mini Cooper SE’s city-car cred. The town’s one-ways and slim alleys thread by neighborhoods which are principally empty for now, other than storefronts and banners with “We Love You Denver” hanging within the entrance.

Like all electrical automotive, the Cooper SE whizzes round Denver prefer it was born at altitude. The 181-horsepower (135-kw) motor powering the entrance wheels by way of a single-speed transmission shoots the Mini throughout intersections in a yellow-tinged blur. Mini says that the Cooper SE’s efficiency lands someplace between the bottom Cooper and Cooper S; 0-60 mph within the all-electric model takes 6.9 seconds in comparison with the Cooper’s 7.5 and Cooper S’s 6.5 seconds.

The Cooper SE tugs more durable than any of the above, although.

The Cooper SE has two ranges of brake regen, and the default setting is stiff sufficient for one-pedal driving all through Denver, offered you don’t get too enthusiastic. Toggle the flip change underneath the 6.5-inch touchscreen and its regen is noticeably lighter, however not higher.

The Cooper SE’s electrical motor’s 207 pound-feet matches the Cooper S’s torque determine however pulls faster and extra predictably. Taking pictures throughout intersections isn’t simply useful in Denver—it’s virtually a survival talent. The town’s downtown 45-degree shift from surrounding streets creates malfunction junctions that lure touring unawares and gradual drivers into limitless loops across the conference heart and its three-story bear peering into the home windows. Cute, proper up till the fourth time you’ve seen it.

Round right here, the low batteries push down on the 17-inch geometric wheels using on Goodyear Eagle F1 run-flat tires that claw on the metropolis streets and concrete. The Cooper SE’s trip is stiff; typical Mini. The run-flat tires are stiffer; typical BMW (which is Mini’s guardian firm). The end result? Pulverized decrease lumbar.

For hours, I wound across the streets, dashed into parking spots, circled tons, and wound up and down parking garages just like the previous Path Mud Steakhouse slide. Denver’s not recognized for potholes, regardless of our proximity to the Midwest, however after a few hours I’d had sufficient.

I valued the wi-fi CarPlay compatibility and Harmon Kardon audio conserving me firm across the people-free cityscape, however I valued strolling extra.

Assault the physique and the top will comply with.

Enjoyable, first

Disgruntled (and albeit, bewildered), I discovered my approach to the bottom of a Wash Park boxelder and thought of my subsequent transfer. Angrily, I scribbled into my pocket book: “Seats aren’t snug. In any respect. Like, no.”

It was the start of a success checklist that included digs on the head-up show (a foldable display screen that’s simply skipped), restricted outward imaginative and prescient for tall drivers (I’m 6-foot-2 and craned to see visitors lights above me), and a cramped rear seat (behind me was a fist-size house for legs).

My thoughts wandered to darker locations as my again staved off spasms.

Absolutely, there are redeeming qualities to the Cooper SE. I’m unsure what these are but, however gotta be, proper?

At $30,750 to start out, together with vacation spot however earlier than any relevant state or federal tax incentives, the 2020 Mini Cooper SE wants tax breaks to become visible. Right here in Colorado, we’ve probably the most aggressive incentives accessible within the U.S.: $4,000, and its on the hood. Paired with as much as $7,500 again from the feds, that places a 2020 Cooper SE under $20,000 to start out.

My tester, shod with $7,000 in choices that included that head-up show and premium audio, can be about $26,000 with Uncle Sam’s assist. Or about as a lot as a MX-5 Miata.

And my line is coming into view.

Recharge and reset

Armed with the concept that I might not, couldn’t, and mustn’t give up to previous age and a teen’s automotive, I pitch the Mini round—an hour at a time—for days. No nook was too tight, no grip was sacrificed. The miles piled however the battery stayed principally the identical. Solely after 100 miles indicated on the journey, did it dip under 20%.

After 110 miles, the Cooper SE’s remaining battery meter discovered the one digits. After 119.three miles and 4% state of cost remaining, I surrendered to a fast-charging plug at a grocery retailer subsequent to Downtown Denver’s Union Station—about 10% additional than the EPA vary estimate.

Vary and enjoyable, the Mini overdelivered.

Replenishing the battery on a fast cost as much as 80% takes about 35 minutes, in response to Mini, which was correct nearly to the minute for me.

I did not count on to be left confused by the Mini Cooper SE. It is an all-electric automobile that is targeted extra on enjoyable. Different electrical automobiles that I’ve pushed are geared extra towards effectivity—vitality effectivity and effectivity with house.

Sensible? Probably not. Enjoyable? Yep. I eschew the concept that a guide transmission is a prerequisite for enjoyable and the Mini’s single-speed, torquey electrical motor is proof.

I wasn’t prepared for the concept that an electrical automotive doesn’t must be brute-force environment friendly in every thing it does. The 2020 Mini Cooper SE is what a fun-first electrical automotive could possibly be within the close to future.

It’s the liberty to decide on one thing inexpensive and enjoyable to drive with a plug that I didn’t count on so shortly. Nor did my again.

Let’s block adverts! (Why?)
