I needn’t have nervous. No sooner had I left my placid suburban byways and hopped onto the “Mad Max”-esque Backyard State Parkway, flipping the drive mode into “Unbridled” mode (Get it? This MUSTANG is a WILD PONY!), that the Mach-E went, nicely … it went Mustang on me.

I did not even have one of many performance-oriented variations to check out. My E-Stang was a Premium trim degree with all-wheel-drive. The $60,500 GT has 480 horsepower (and 634 pound-feet of torque, for the top-spec automotive), versus a mere 346 for my extended-range mannequin. The GT additionally has a Ford-claimed 3.8-second 0-60mph time, whereas the Mach-E Premium that I put the hammer down on manages a mere … 4.Eight seconds.

Yeah. That is quick. Actual quick. For a four-door hatchback crossover.

As for that truck-y factor, it is extra that the Mach-E Premium is definitely constructed for velocity, with a beefy suspension organized round a cumbersome 88 kilowatt-hour battery pack, a motor over every axle, and a steadfast refusal to lean when pushed right into a nook. Rock-solid. And get this: you do not have to child the factor as a result of because of crossover floor clearance, one can trundle out and in of sloping driveways and over potholed Northeastern infrastructure.

In the meantime, in a straight line, the Mach-E goes WHOOSH. And, in Unbridled mode, you’ll be able to activate a moderately Mustang-sounding “engine” be aware, eliminating the at-times depressingly futuristic whine that EVs are identified for.

It is not honest to say that the Mach-E has competitors. The EV market is at the moment rinky-dink, at nearly 2% of whole annual gross sales, so competitors at this early stage is basically meaningless. Nonetheless, the Mach-E is a shot throughout the bow of the market chief, Tesla, and Tesla’s personal crossover hatch, the Mannequin Y. The Mach-E can be sorta-kinda taking up the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi eTron, and a few EVs which have been within the recreation longer, such because the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Bolt.

The Mach-E can be an addition to what’s now a correct sub-brand at Ford. Mustang has been one factor and one factor solely since 1965: a two-door sports activities automotive with muscular inflections. The horse badge has taken up residence within the grille-less fascia of the Mach-E, so the place there was solely the long-lasting ‘Stang, there’s now an all-electric folks hauler.

One very cool-looking crossover

It is both sensible or cynical, relying in your perspective. I am leaning sensible, and given the sheer variety of curious inquiries from members of the general public in my two transient days with the Mach-E, in addition to just a few thumbs-up in visitors, I believe I may be leaning within the right course.

My tester was an excellent ‘un: “Speedy Purple” metallic paint job and a “Mild Grey perforated Activex” inside, which learn as a creamy off-white with a mix of tweedy grey trim with fake carbon-fiber highlights. Nineteens within the wheel arches, excellent.

My older son, after all, wished to know why there was an SUV with a striated chrome pony on the entrance, and I needed to clarify to him that the Mustang design language had been tailored to a crossover electrical car format.

The “Um, OK, positive, dad” response was to be anticipated.

Nonetheless, the Mach-E appears to be like moderately cool, even when is not a BEV GT350 (what son primary would truly prefer to see). It additionally appears to be like a tad Lexus-meets-Mazda, so in the end the stallion on the non-grille and the sequential Mustang tail lights have been welcome (the lights strobe within the course of the flip sign).

The fastback, crossover coupé silhouette, completed off with an built-in spoiler, is très of the second. And I definitely loved boarding the Mach-E after darkish, when a snazzy ‘Stang welcome mat, crafted in gentle, was projected onto the pavement.

Inside, the show-stopper is the 15.5-inch central infotainment touchscreen, with its superb huge ol’ quantity knob smack within the bottom-middle. I really like an enormous quantity knob! Extra subdued is the 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, actually only a skinny rectangle of display screen tucked behind the steering wheel. A panoramic glass roof owes one thing to Tesla’s Mannequin Three and Mannequin Y, whereas the rear seats are cozy and roomy sufficient for grownups.

Cargo capability is 29 cubic toes, going as much as 60 with the rear seats down, and the entrance trunk provides one other 5 cubic toes, in addition to a nifty separator to maintain stuff from banging round. That sufficient capability to outdo the compact crossovers of the world.

Nicely over 250 miles of vary, and no scarcity of velocity

You’ve the vary for a weekend away, with Ford touting 270 miles on a single cost (the rear-wheel-drive Mach-E notches 300 miles). I did not have the Mach-E lengthy sufficient to empty the battery — though I engaged in loads of spirited driving and acquired it down near 100 miles left within the tank — however recharging at Stage 2 or 240 volts ought to refill the Mach-E with electrons in a single day, whereas quick DC charging must devour round an hour.

My tester was geared up with an onboard cost cable, Ford-branded (in truth, the one Ford-scripted function on the complete car — the Mach-E may be very a lot in step with Mustang custom right here, with the Blue Oval nowhere in sight).

Aiding with electrical energy replenishment is regenerative braking, which reclaims some misplaced cost, in addition to one-pedal drive mode, accessible by way of the central touchscreen, that makes use of the electrical motors’ engine-braking qualities to remove foot-action nearly utterly. (I discovered the one-pedal system to be a little bit cumbersome.)

The Mach-E has a one-speed transmission that sends energy from the battery pack beneath the ground to the dual-motor AWD setup. Within the cabin, it is a easy gear-shift rotary knob, very like the one on the infotainment display screen. Three drive modes can be found — Have interaction, Whisper, and Unbridled, with the primary providing fundamental thrills, the second firming every part down, and the third, as beforehand mentioned, unleashing electrical hell.

Steering? Not gentle, at instances too heavy, however exceptionally steady at excessive speeds. Put all of it collectively and you’ve got, as you would possibly anticipate with a correct Mustang, an electrical muscle crossover. I do know, I do know — what a mashup! However on this respect, the Mach-E is exclusive, a satisfying mixture of a car that evokes the gas-powered Mustang’s gruff qualities whereas, you understand, saving the planet.

Tech-wise, the Mach-E has Ford’s very good SYNC Four infotainment software program working on the large display screen, however the automotive additionally used that digital actual property to handle an assortment of car features, some not all that efficiently. The sliders for heated seats have been tough to get the hold of, as an example. A Bang & Olufsen, 10-speaker premium audio system fills the cabin with pretty tunes, and never by the way gives the soundtrack for the electrical non-exhaust.

Bluetooth pairing is easy, and there are each USB ports and a wi-fi charging pad that, sadly, would not have the grip to maintain a smartphone in place. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be found, and the onboard GPS navigation function deftly dealt with what little I threw at it.

Extra tech than I’ve ever skilled in a Ford

Exterior of the Tesla-verse, I draw back from smartphone interfaces for automobiles. However I went forward and downloaded FordPass for the iPhone and linked it to the Mach-E, to discover utilizing it as a key and likewise to evaluate among the monitoring choices. It was helpful, though I did not spend hours delving into it. One notable functionality: It was capable of distant begin the Mach-E from 100 toes away.

My Mach-E was geared up with a collection of semi-self-driving techniques, together with an autosteer function that cooperates with adaptive cruise management, lane-keep help, and computerized parking (all clustered beneath the “Ford Co-Pilot 360” aegis). However whereas the association was as much as the problem of freeway driving in New Jersey, I used to be actually having a lot enjoyable helming the Mach-E that I did not use the system all that a lot.

The decision on the Mach-E is that I wound up being shocked by how partaking and emotional the car was. Having pushed every part from the “Ludicrous Mode” Tesla Mannequin S and unique Roadster to stuff just like the Honda Match EV and the Jaguar I-PACE, to not point out the all-new Polestar 2, I am accustomed to battery-electrics going for sci-fi over old-school.

The engineers, it appears, both need to clobber you with G-forces or emulate the takeover temperament of an alien spaceship. The Mach-E goals for a huskier, extra visceral impression, and in my fingers, it was in the end extra enjoyable to drive than the objectively stupendous Porsche Taycan.

There is a whiff, then, of the reactionary in regards to the Mach-E, however for a crossover that is been christened a Mustang, it will get a detailed as one may anticipate to that ineffable ‘Stang vibe, which has usually mixed surprisingly good driving dynamics with a form of “Yee-Haw!!!” American-ness that offers no quarter to obtained knowledge about how a sports activities automotive ought to behave (or misbehave).

When you detect a paradox right here, nicely then, bravo. Ford has taken the Mustang legacy and melded it with high-tech propulsion and the wildly standard crossover type to create one thing memorable. When you have been to A-B the Mach-E alongside the Tesla Mannequin Y, you would possibly spend little or no time debating which superficially related car extra completely fires the creativeness.

A press release — and a threat

From the attitude of Ford’s enterprise, the Mach-E is each an announcement and threat: the previous as a result of it is the 117-year-old carmaker’s first “severe” EV; and the latter as a result of it is such a daring transfer.

For me, the Mach-E launched a brand new idea: Suppose not about how the car would possibly compete with the market chief, however the way it would possibly outline its personal id.

That is essential as a result of if 98% of future yearly EV gross sales are but to occur, the following wave of automobiles goes to have to face out. The Mach-E does that in additional methods than one. I could not get sufficient of it.
