Review update: 2020 Mercedes-Benz A220 struts its small-car savoir-faire – Motor Authority

Funds ‘Benzes are boffo in my e-book.

Not just for the alliterative alternatives but in addition as a result of they’ve been fairly good. That’s a far throw from faultless, thoughts you. The last-gen GLA and CLA had been much less comfy within the rear seats than a front-row seat in an iron maiden—and I don’t imply a live performance. They didn’t drive notably properly both, however for round-about $30,000 a three-pointed star could possibly be yours. That’s the purpose. It helped that the automobile hooked up to the star appeared like a Mercedes, too.

The present crop of child ‘Benzes does it higher.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz A220 sedan is the least costly of the bunch, in comparison with the CLA-, GLA-, and GLB-Courses. All 4 vehicles broadly share the fundamentals: a base 2.0-liter turbo-Four mated to a 7- or 8-speed dual-clutch computerized transmission. All-wheel drive is on the market on the entire above, and efficiency variants are within the mail.

Based mostly on seems to be alone, the GLA-, CLA-, and A-Courses have their tickets to the ball and the GLB could also be caught at house with the chores. The GLB250 is my Cinderella too; it’s extra sensible, spacious, and extra sedate, which is extra according to my worldview. The A-Class takes a unique tack. After our first drive, we had been impressed by the planted really feel behind the wheel of the A-Class.

I’ll second that evaluation, and right here’s what I realized after per week.

Hit: You go, grille

Both as a result of I’m previous, or previous at coronary heart, however I nonetheless suppose the proportions of the A220 are higher suited to small vehicles than the CLA250’s dramatic profile, which has a swoopier roof and slinkier traces. Each vehicles look nice, however the A-Class seems to be higher with a broad and extensive Mercedes-Benz sport-style grille, brief overhangs, and a rising tail like a sprinter within the blocks. The grille seems to be nice and the remainder of the physique follows splendidly with an athletic, poised form.

Hit: Enjoyable to drive

The bottom turbo-Four within the A220 is rated at 188 horsepower, which is lower than equally sized engines discovered within the GLB, GLA, and CLA—down 20 to 33 hp to all three. The engines in all 4 share the identical displacement, bore, stroke, and though the compression ratios are barely totally different, the distinction in horsepower is probably going down to spice up. With smaller enhance however much less weight, from behind the wheel, the A220 feels brighter, sharper, and fewer laggy than the others. The A220 grips, steers, and pivots with out being too stiff. Very good.

Miss: Not sensible

The rear seats aren’t previous CLA-style poor, however they’re tight for greater frames. Paired with a puny 8.6-cubic foot trunk, the A220 is a fairly awful House Depot shuttle. What’s extra, the seats aren’t as comfy as these in BMW and Audi rivals, and the artificial leather-based Mercedes makes use of doesn’t really feel as sturdy.

Hit and Miss: Infotainment

Mercedes’ outsized, twin 10.3-inch screens for devices and infotainment are large within the sprint of the A-Class. Like, IMAX-screen-in-my-bathtub huge. Cool tech as we speak; eyesore tomorrow. However the automaker’s infotainment software program, voice recognition, and integration into the automobile’s different programs are very good. As an illustration, programming a vacation spot into the navigation system not solely reveals the route, time of arrival, and turn-by-turn data within the instrument cluster, it additionally reveals augmented actuality projections on the principle display screen, so I do know when subsequent to show through a stay look. It’s all very slick and useful, and likewise very sophisticated. Tapping the infotainment’s reserve of knowledge and leisure, prospects, and utilizing the internet-connected voice recognition system, all take extra time and focus than the SATs. That’s probably extra time than most patrons will likely be keen to spend with the massive screens. And two of the correct and useful contact controllers—one on the steering wheel and one on the middle console (the opposite is the middle display screen itself)—are simply missed.

Miss: Awful particulars

My tester’s contrasting artificial leather-based seats did no favors to the A220’s finer particulars or lack thereof. The stitching on the seats is unconvincingly awkward—three extensive horizontal loops down the seatback that appeared like an afterthought. The Mercedes star up entrance was lined in a skinny, pocked, and simply scratchable clear floor (that I additionally discovered on the GLB-Class, however nowhere else), and the A220 began to really feel just like the entry-level luxurious automobile that it’s. Bummer.

Miss: Choice, choice

You wouldn’t know that by the worth. My tester rang up nearly $14,000 in choices—similar with the mannequin we first drove—and its bloated $48,295 remaining value felt like a far cry from its $35,795 beginning value. Inflation-adjusted, that’s greater than the primary CLA-Class that was accessible for simply over $30,000 when it went on sale, however this A220 is a greater automobile with a greater journey, even when the worth of entry is larger.
