Tesla slashes its used car warranty — killing another confidence builder – Electrek

Tesla has considerably weakened its used automobile guarantee in one other unusual killing of a shopper confidence builder from the automaker.

Final week, we reported on Tesla canceling its ballsy ‘no questions requested’ 7-day return coverage, which was used as a confidence builder by the automaker and immediately by CEO Elon Musk.

Now we’ve discovered that Tesla has additionally slashed its used automobile guarantee.

Tesla used to supply 2 to 4 -year guarantee on used Mannequin S and Mannequin X autos:

• Mannequin S and Mannequin X that had been underneath Four years previous and underneath 50,000 miles on the time of Tesla supply: Used Mannequin S and Mannequin X are protected by a Used Automobile Restricted Guarantee for Four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, beginning out of your supply date. The steadiness of unique Battery and Drive Unit Restricted guarantee nonetheless applies for used autos. The Tesla Used Automobile Restricted Guarantee doesn’t lengthen or in any other case alter the unique guarantee.
• Mannequin S and Mannequin X that had been over Four years previous or over 50,000 miles and underneath 6 years previous and 100,000 miles on the time of Tesla supply: Used Automobile Prolonged Restricted Guarantee offers protection for as much as 2 years post-delivery or as much as 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The steadiness of the unique Battery and Drive Unit Restricted Guarantee nonetheless applies for used autos. The Tesla Used Automobile Restricted Guarantee doesn’t lengthen or in any other case alter the unique guarantee.

Now Tesla has up to date its used automobile guarantee to just one yr or 10,000 miles over the unique guarantee:

“Tesla used autos are lined by the rest of Four years or 50,000 miles left on the Fundamental Automobile Restricted Guarantee. After expiration, the Used Automobile Restricted Guarantee offers further protection of 1 yr or 10,000 miles. If the Fundamental Automobile Restricted Guarantee has already expired, the Used Automobile Restricted Guarantee will present protection of 1 yr or 10,000 miles, beginning out of your supply date.”

Whereas the brand new used automobile guarantee being added on high of the brand new automobile guarantee is sweet for more moderen used autos bought from Tesla, it actually cripples any sort of guarantee on used Tesla autos from 2016 and older.

As a substitute of getting 2 to Four years of guarantee, now they solely get 1 yr or 10,000 miles.

Electrek’s Take

It’s unusual that Tesla made these two strikes again to again. Each the 7-day return coverage and used automobile guarantee had been aimed toward constructing confidence in Tesla autos.

To be honest, these confidence builder initiatives put them forward of the competitors, and now eradicating them places them on par, which isn’t unhealthy in perspective, but it surely’s nonetheless noteworthy.

I purchased two used Tesla autos, one from Tesla immediately and one from a third-party, and in each circumstances, the guarantee was actually essential.

Each vehicles had Tesla’s unique 8-year limitless mileage powertrain guarantee that has confirmed extraordinarily helpful to me since my 2012 Mannequin S P85 Signature is presently getting a brand new battery pack and electrical motor simply 2 months earlier than the guarantee ends.

I additionally obtained a two yr used automobile guarantee on the Mannequin S, which lined a couple of repairs, but it surely was nothing loopy.

Now with solely 1-year and 10,000 miles, I feel extra individuals will take a look at third-party transactions to purchase used Teslas.
