The cars that won't live to see 2021 – CNET

2020 is coming to a detailed and we are able to all sit up for a brilliant new yr — except you are a hardcore fan of considered one of these vehicles, that’s. This yr, we see a continuation of a development that began final yr: SUVs proceed to steamroll the American vehicle trade, squeezing out the weakest sedans, wagons and convertibles as gross sales in these segments plummet. Lots of this yr’s canceled fashions are due to get replaced by both extra sales-friendly crossovers or, in some circumstances, new devoted electrical autos.

Nevertheless, the squeeze is made extra extreme by the COVID-19 pandemic placing much more of a crunch on slow-selling vehicles. In some circumstances, automakers are merely trimming the fats, purging their lineups of unpopular fashions with no plans for substitute. For others — like Fiat, which is right down to only a single mannequin in its 2021 lineup — the longer term is a contact extra unsure.

The biggest of Acura’s sedans, the RLX traces its roots all the best way again to the Legend — one of many very first fashions to put on the Acura badge. However in 2021, the legend involves a detailed with the RLX’s discontinuation. The sedan’s gross sales have been lower than stellar due to buyer focus shifting to SUVs throughout the trade within the US.

The excellent news is that the up to date Acura TLX is kind of entering into its fallen sibling’s footwear subsequent yr. Acura’s smaller sedan has grown a lot for 2021 that it is inside millimeters of the outgoing RLX’s wheelbase and general size. The brand new mannequin appears superb and must be fairly the performer — particularly in forthcoming Sort S guise — giving followers of Acura sedans one thing to sit up for.

After a 17-year run, the Italian reply to Porsche’s Boxster is ending manufacturing. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider boasts a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, a screaming turbocharged engine mounted amidships and efficiency that needed to be skilled to be understood. The Spider’s demise ought to come as no shock to anybody who observed that the 4C Coupe disappeared from Alfa’s US lineup final yr.

There aren’t many mid-engine sports activities coupes left for beneath six-figures — simply the Porsche 718s, the C8 Corvette and (simply barely) the Lotus Evora. We’re undoubtedly unhappy to see this one go.

BMW’s i8 is a technological marvel. Even now — 11 years after we noticed the primary idea automotive and 6 years after the manufacturing mannequin’s launch — the i8 one of the crucial futuristic designs on the highway. Nevertheless, the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 usually finds itself unnoticed of the dialog round electrified efficiency with full-electric vehicles just like the Tesla Mannequin S Plaid, Porsche Taycan and the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT main the best way.

And so the i8’s run involves a detailed. However we anticipate it — or one thing that appears so much prefer it — to return to BMW’s lineup as a pure electrical automotive in just a few years.

The writing’s been on the wall for the Cadillac CT6 for a while now with US manufacturing ending again in January. This additionally means saying goodbye to the woefully short-lived CT6-V with its superior 4.2-liter twin-turbo Blackwing V8, making 550 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. Bummer.

Like many automakers, Cadillac is shifting focus to faster-selling SUVs, together with the upcoming full-electric Lyriq. Patrons searching for Caddy sedan will nonetheless have their alternative of the smaller CT4, CT5 and the brand new kinder, gentler CT4-V and CT5-V.

Huge ole asterisk right here. Chevrolet is technically solely stopping Camaro SS and ZL1 gross sales in California and Washington due to make use of of brake pads containing copper, which do not meet new state laws.

The efficiency trim ranges will nonetheless be accessible in the remainder of the nation and, in 2022, the Camaro SS and ZL1 will return to California dealerships with a brand new brake compound that complies with the newest regulation.

One other sufferer of Normal Motors’ nice sedan purge, the Chevrolet Impala ends manufacturing this yr, leaving the Chevy Malibu as the one sedan carrying the bowtie badge. For now.

This is not the primary time the Impala has bitten the mud. The identify has recognition and historical past that are like gold to automotive advertising and product groups. Nevertheless, it is extremely unlikely that the sedan will return this time.

Out there as a sedan and as a hatchback, each variants of the Chevrolet Sonic kick the bucket this yr. On one hand, this subcompact area of interest is maybe higher crammed in Chevy’s lineup by the Trailblazer SUV. Then again, Chevrolet wanted to clear room on its upcoming Bolt EUV electrical crossover, which ought to begin rolling off the road someday subsequent yr.

Actually, we have been stunned the Dodge Grand Caravan made it this far. Regardless of mainly inventing the trendy thought of a minivan, the OG has for years paled compared to newer fashions like Toyota’s Sienna and the Honda Odyssey. And in 2016, the Grand Caravan was basically changed by the brand new Chrysler Pacifica as FCA’s flagship household van.

An “if it ain’t broke, do not repair it” perspective has stored the Grand Caravan’s manufacturing prices low — it hasn’t been considerably up to date since, wow, 2008?! — and fleet and rental gross sales possible stored it cruising alongside within the background all this time, however now it is time for a well-earned retirement.

As the one SUV on this checklist, chances are you’ll marvel why Dodge is discontinuing the Journey if everybody loves crossovers a lot? Nicely, it is as a result of everybody hates the Dodge Journey.

A shell of what was already a reasonably milquetoast crossover based mostly on the long-dead Avenger sedan, the Journey’s V6 and all-wheel-drive variants have already been phased out. The ultimate leg of its, ahem, journey is powered solely by a 173-hp, 2.4-liter four-banger with a 30-year-old, four-speed computerized transmission. We will solely hope its eventual substitute, which is rumored to be based mostly on Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio, is much more thrilling.

Fiat’s riff on the Mazda Miata by no means fairly grabbed us just like the Japanese unique, regardless of sharing practically an identical underpinnings. The 124 Spider added its personal Italian aptitude to the design and Fiat outfitted its roadster with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. The suspension was retuned for a extra grand touring really feel, leading to a way more relaxed and informal tackle Mazda’s fun-loving little sports activities automotive.

Lengthy stay the roadster. Simply, , the Mazda model.

Fiat’s 2021 portfolio is wanting sparse. Final yr, the 500 left the lineup and now, together with the aforementioned Spider, the 500L has been discontinued. That leaves simply the 500X crossover as Fiat’s sole banner bearer within the US. Yikes.

The automaker has refocused on its not too long ago redesigned full-electric 500e in Europe, however that mannequin possible will not make it onto America’s roads anytime quickly — “electrical subcompact hatchback” is a disastrous Venn diagram for our SUV and truck-heavy highways — leaving Fiat’s destiny within the States wanting doubtful.

The second-gen Ford Fusion sedan dates again to 2013 and has seen just a few facelifts and updates over time to maintain it fairly contemporary. For now, it is time to say goodbye to Ford’s midsize sedan as manufacturing shuts down, maybe to make method for a brand new Outback-class crossover that revives the identify in just a few years.

The two.7-liter, twin-turbocharged Sport mannequin was already discontinued again in 2019 leaving the Fusion Energi PHEV as essentially the most fascinating variant on sale. The plug-in hybrid variant managed to outlast its fiercest foe — the Chevrolet Volt, which received the axe final yr — however with simply 26 miles of plug-in vary, Ford’s electrical future lies with autos just like the 200- to 300-mile Mustang Mach-E.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R, previously the very best manufacturing Mustangs that cash may purchase, ends manufacturing this yr to make method for the subsequent finest manufacturing Mustang that cash should purchase — and we aren’t speaking in regards to the Mach-E. Whereas we’re unhappy to listen to the GT350’s 526-hp flat-plane V8 roaring over the horizon, we’re enthusiastic about Ford’s focus shifting to the 760-hp, supercharged GT500, to not point out the brand new Mach 1.

The new Honda Civic is ready to reach in 2021, however the two-door Coupe is not going to be becoming a member of its sedan and hatchback brothers on this 11th era. Why? Nicely, it does not promote in addition to the opposite variants. The Civic sedan already blends coupe-like styling with a extra accessible again seat, leaving the two-door mannequin in a decent spot in an already shrinking area of interest, even amongst consumers of the sportier Si trim degree.

The Honda Match is a wonderful subcompact hatch with a ridiculous consideration to element in terms of maximizing house for individuals and cargo in such a small footprint. Sadly, there’s simply no room within the US marketplace for it. And so, regardless of it bringing us a lot pleasure, Honda is Marie Kondo-ing the Match out of its 2021 lineup, pointing consumers as an alternative on the HR-V. Happily, Honda Match manufacturing will proceed in different components of the world, the place it is referred to as the Jazz.

There’s simply no room in Hyundai’s US lineup for 2 compact hatchbacks and so, the Elantra GT — the five-door variant of the automaker’s Elantra — quietly bows out for 2021. Hyundai not too long ago up to date the GT simply two years in the past, so the hatchback will proceed to be offered in European and Asian markets.

The Elantra GT’s departure frees house at dealerships for the subcompact Venue and Kona SUVs, which most consumers have been leaning in the direction of anyway. Nevertheless, the GT leaves liftback lovers in good palms with the Veloster and the sizzling hatch Veloster N to select from.

Jaguar’s XE was wonderful. The entry-level luxurious sedan’s sporty efficiency and aesthetic received our consideration, however not-great tech and reliability considerations meant that its gross sales have been solely ever a shadow of the BMW three Sequence, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4 with which it meant to compete.

Jag is battening down the hatches and tightening up its lineup. The XE is out, leaving the marginally bigger XF and the not too long ago redesigned F-Sort because the model’s solely non-SUVs.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake’s destiny was sealed maybe even earlier than it was even launched. Today solely the very best of the very best wagons survive, and even then, most are high-end fanatic fashions — the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, the Audi RS6 Avant and Porsche’s Panamera Sport Turismo, for instance. The remaining have both vanished or morphed into tall pseudo-crossovers with the intention to survive.

The XF Sportbrake was a superb performer, however going through the identical challenges because the XE sedan, was by no means nice and so does not make the minimize for 2021.

The time period “underrated” will get tossed round so much lately, however we expect the Lexus GS F is really an underappreciated trip. That is principally as a result of sport luxurious consumers have a tendency not to think about Lexus when cross-shopping their BMW M5s and Mercedes-AMG E63s. No, the GS F was by no means as sharp or hardcore because the German competitors, however its mix of legendary Lexus construct high quality, beneficiant efficiency and quiet luxurious have been to not be missed both.

Rather less fancy-pants than the flagship LS, however not fairly as “attempt arduous” because the RC or IS, the Lexus GS and GS F fills a candy spot within the automaker’s lineup earlier than quietly bowing out of 2021.

There’s a lot to love in regards to the Lincoln Continental. The rear-drive luxurious sedan is handsomely styled, options glorious and cozy efficiency and incorporates a stable suite of cabin and security options. There have been even just a few examples constructed with rear coach doorways and further luxurious interiors.

However nearly as good as it’s, the Continental isn’t any Navigator. Luxurious consumers merely desire to drive (and be pushed) within the extra spacious and imposing Navigator SUV. And so, Lincoln is doubling down on the full-size SUV and placing the Conti to pasture in 2021.

Basically the Lincoln model of the discontinued Ford Fusion, there’s not a lot to say in regards to the Lincoln MKZ that hasn’t already been stated above. The premium branded mannequin by no means offered in addition to the Ford, making it a fair higher candidate for 2021’s chopping block.

In its wake, the sedan previously referred to as the Zephyr leaves a Lincoln lineup composed fully of SUVs, together with the Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator.

Luxurious producer Mercedes-Benz affords extra convertible choices than most. Nevertheless, the 2021 cancellation of the slow-selling SLC-Class leaves consumers with one fewer alternative.

Automakers have by and enormous gotten out of the roadster recreation. Certain, there’s the BMW Z4, Porsche Boxster and Mazda Miata left to select from, however lately drop-top two-seaters are few and much between, and most Mercedes consumers would relatively step up for one thing slick just like the AMG GT.

If you wish to get technical, the Toyota Yaris has been absent from the US marketplace for a while now. The automotive that is been on sale for the previous couple of years is a rebadged, rebranded model of the Mazda2 offered elsewhere. That explains why the Yaris instantly received good in 2016, when the swap occurred.

Too unhealthy gross sales for brand spanking new subcompacts within the US have all however completely dried up. The Yaris’ cancellation, together with the truth that we’re not getting the tremendous sizzling Yaris GR that replaces it, is the worst information ever.

Let’s block adverts! (Why?)
