The Cost of Car Culture | Rivard Report – Rivard Report

Malvina Reynold’s 1962 music “Little Bins,” a jaunty criticism of middle-class conformity and the uniformity of suburbia, nonetheless holds up as we speak as city sprawl has progressed in lots of elements of the USA, producing the low-density neighborhoods and intensive highway networks that characterize San Antonio’s fashionable panorama. Actually, suburban residents have discovered consolation of their giant houses and spacious yards in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, one value (or, to some, one profit) of suburban life is the unbridled use of vehicles in lieu of public transportation.

In San Antonio, the expansion of suburbia has coincided with a cultural sanctity of vehicles, inflicting a dependence on vehicles for transportation. Such widespread dependence upon private motor automobiles presents many environmental and monetary prices, whereas additionally reinforcing a cultural attachment to vehicles. I’m certainly not exempt from this. I’ve skilled the impediment course often called rush hour visitors, witnessed the intensive development venture on U.S. Freeway 281, endured the burgeoning mass of automobiles on the freeway, and inhaled the gasoline fumes that sneak via the vents of my mother’s minivan.

In our new COVID-19 actuality, self-isolation has proven me how a lot time I usually spend in a automotive. Studying that air air pollution skilled a big drop at the beginning of the coronavirus shutdown made me take into account how we are able to keep this development. But, as companies open and other people start to emerge from their houses, it appears to be like like visitors has returned to pre-shutdown ranges.

Our each day drives throughout the sprawling metropolis of San Antonio instantly injury the setting. As we spend extra time driving throughout town, extra gasoline, a non-renewable useful resource, is required and extra greenhouse gases are pushed into our ambiance, contributing to an ever-warming planet and people record-breaking temperature highs San Antonio experiences. Our intensive time on the highway contaminates our personal Edwards Aquifer, our fundamental supply of consuming water, because the stream of stormwater carries the hydrocarbons and heavy metals from vehicles into overwhelmed water filtration methods. Whereas extreme driving itself has environmental prices, the mass manufacturing and fast consumption of vehicles locations discarded automobiles in junkyards, the place plastics and metals waste away, polluting pure areas.

However, you might need heard a lot of this earlier than. At this time limit, many, if not most, folks comprehend the environmental value of extreme driving; nonetheless, such reasoning hasn’t satisfied many San Antonians to vary their transportation habits. Maybe we must always analyze funds as an alternative.

Proudly owning a automotive itself has its apparent monetary prices, and, in a metropolis that maintains one of many largest methods of state highways within the nation, these prices are sometimes exacerbated. Automobiles require care, and upkeep prices can pile up rapidly. As of 2019, the common annual value to keep up a brand new car is $9,282, which is the very best value recorded because the American Vehicle Affiliation began recording bills in 1950. San Antonio (and Texas as an entire) is infamous for its excessive fee of automotive accidents, and every crash prices cash and, too typically, lives. It’s additionally vital to acknowledge that vehicles themselves are relatively poor investments, as evident by their inevitable and fast depreciation.

Motor automobiles have really change into a cultural phenomenon inside San Antonio, which means that most of the monetary and environmental burdens are by no means absolutely thought of. Many people have apathetically accepted our lengthy commutes, selecting to dwell in greater homes farther from work, to get up early and head residence late to account for visitors, all to attain the American dream. Certainly, the idyllic American family is characterised by a big residence with a two-car storage. You change into extra of a Texan if you purchase a gas-guzzling pickup truck. Moreover, it appears that there’s an unwavering disdain amongst San Antonians for public transportation. Automobiles have come to characterize private liberty and personal house, two American rules that we can’t get ourselves to compromise for the sake of the setting and even our payments.

The answer to this downside isn’t simple. Our metropolis is rapidly increasing with its rising inhabitants, accentuating our many challenges associated to municipal planning and administration. We rely on our automobiles, they facilitate our each day lives; how can we merely give that up? To alter, we’ve got to acknowledge the cultural significance that vehicles maintain in our neighborhood and be open to adjusting our values to prioritize the well-being of our metropolis.

Contemplating that it gained’t be doable for most individuals to up and purchase a brand new electrical car, we should undertake higher driving practices that may obtain an identical aim. The obvious resolution is to drive much less. As a substitute of driving, attempt strolling or biking to your nearest grocery retailer. You’ll additionally get in some good train and, maybe, really feel a good higher sense of non-public autonomy and freedom than is felt in a automotive.

Whereas public transportation will not be a viable possibility throughout this pandemic, it’s nonetheless out there to be used and needs to be utilized when doable. Contemplate carpooling. When on a seek for a brand new car, mirror on shopping for a used automotive or, if it’s reasonably priced, a hybrid or electrical automotive. Lastly, use your car to its fullest extent earlier than changing it. If we are able to practice ourselves to assume sustainably earlier than we act, we are able to confidently say that every of our decisions are making a constructive impression on the neighborhood.

Sustainability isn’t simply an environmental problem – its significance extends into the realms of economics and tradition. Our particular person decisions and values kind the tradition of San Antonio, which means that solely we’ve got the ability to encourage change. The small decisions of every particular person combination to make a giant distinction. At a time once we are all inspecting our lives, now, greater than ever, is the time to begin making the appropriate small decisions.
